One of our favourite parts about Christmas is decorating our homes, from Christmas trees in the living room to Christmas wreaths on the front door. Not only do decorations give your home the ultimate cosy, Christmas feel, but decorating for Christmas is an amazing way to spend extra time with family and friends.

While wreaths are one of the most popular Christmas decorations, seen on many front doors, they have an interesting history that not many people are aware of. The word ‘wreath’ stems from the word ‘writhe’ in old England, which meant to ‘write’ or to ‘twist’. Indeed, Christmas wreaths are made by twisting evergreen branches into a circle, before they are decorated with various flowers and other accents. The Romans began the tradition of hanging Christmas wreaths on their doors, using wreaths as a symbol of high social status and pride. Women and athletes also donned wreaths as a symbol of pride and honour.

Since Christmas wreaths are made from evergreen branches, they represent eternal life. This is because evergreens were admired as one of the only trees that were able to survive the harsh conditions of winter, becoming a symbol of resilience. The evergreen branches, together with the circular shape of the wreath represent faith, life and hope.

This year, why not decorate your Christmas wreaths a little different and stand out from your neighbours? Keep reading for some inspiration on how you can decorate your Christmas wreaths in a way that will certainly impress all passers-by.

Berries Christmas Wreath

One of the most festive, well-known symbols of Christmas is red berries, so why not make red berries the main accent of your  Christmas wreath? Simply add a generous amount of red ilex berries and any other decoration of your choice. We recommend following a red theme by adding red baubles, and red ribbon. For a more earthy feel, add some pine cones. Another great addition to your wreath could be slices of citrus fruit and bunches of cinnamon sticks, which will not only create a wintery aesthetic but will also make sure that your wreaths smell divine.

Chilli Christmas Wreath

This Christmas wreath is certainly unique and will definitely catch the eyes of anyone who enters or walks past your door. For this decoration,  less is more and you only need one item: chillies. Simply add a generous amount of chillies to your wreath for a spicy twist to a traditional red and green wreath.

A Splash of Autumn

An  autumnal wreath is great for those looking to cling to autumn and embrace the gorgeous autumnal tones of red, orange and brown. Simply add brown and red foliage to your wreath, together with a generous amount of pine cones. Another great addition to this wreath is slices of citrus fruits, such as oranges and lemons, as well as bunches of cinnamon sticks. This will get your wreath looking and smelling like Christmas!

Christmas Bauble Wreath

Create a metallic, magical Christmas wreath covered in golden baubles. Simply add any gold baubles you like, together with pine cones. We recommend getting some gold metallic spray paint and spraying parts of your wreath, or even adding some gold glitter, to make it extra sparkling and give it a magical feel.

Succulent Christmas Wreath

This design is unconventional and unique, yet elegant. Perfect for those with a simple, classic taste yet who want something a little different. Simple add aeonium, green apples, pine cones and any other decoration of choice to create a  succulent wreath.

A Dash of Purple

Why not venture away from the classic Christmas colours of red and green and go for something a little more eye-catching? Add dried or fresh lavender to your wreath, together with pine cones and golden accents, such as gold baubles or gold spray-painted leaves to add a dash of purple to your Christmas wreath.

Christmas Wreath with Flowers

This is a white, classic Christmas wreath. Incorporate different flowers and foliage, such as white roses, thistle lisianthus, eucalyptus berries, leucadendron and wax flowers for a unique, yet traditional aesthetic. Why not go for something a little extra and add a candle to the middle or 4 candles for a  classic Advent wreath? Not only would this look gorgeous on any door, but it would also look great as a centrepiece for a coffee table.

Christmas Wreath with Hearts

Spread the love this Christmas with a red Christmas wreath decorated with hearts and berries. Simply add any heart-shaped decorations of your choice and make these the main accents of your wreath. Then add red berries in between the hearts and some pine cones for an extra wintery feel.

Christmas is such a special time of year. Decorating your home for it is both an opportunity to bond and create special memories with loved ones and also to express your creativity. Christmas wreaths are often the first decoration people see when they come to your house and it is, therefore, important for them to be as interesting and eye-grabbing as possible!
