Freesia Flowers

The freesia flower originated in South Africa, and belongs to the Iris family which includes approximately 14 freesia species. This flower got its name when the botanist, Christian P. Ecklon, named the flower after Friedrich H.T. Freese, a fellow botanist, as a commemoration of their friendship.

Due to their delicate fragrance, freesias are one of the most popular flowers in the world. However, they are very difficult to grow in domestic gardens and their petals are extremely delicate. They are popular as cut flowers and are often a florist’s favourite for bouquets and centrepieces. The freesia flower is wonderful as an appreciation gift towards an act of kindness, or as a gift for a new baby boy, or a new baby girl. The words usually associated with freesia are sweetness, friendship, purity, innocence and trust. With such connotations it is not unusual to see why freesias are also the flowers of love for many people.

Freesia flowers are similar to gladioli in that the flowers grow from a central stalk that has sword-shaped leaves. The flowers are funnel-shaped and their stalks can grow up to one foot in height.

What do freesia flowers symbolise?

Freesias of all colours generally symbolise trust and innocence, but there are several freesia colours that carry specific meanings.

  • White freesias symbolise purity and innocence. They are one of the most popular wedding flowers because they are symbolic of the purity of the bride as well as the trust between the couple

  • Multicoloured freesia bouquets symbolise friendship and thoughtfulness. They make great gifts for family, friends, and even co-workers

  • Pink freesias symbolise motherly love

  • Yellow freesias symbolise joy, renewal, and friendship

  • Red freesias symbolise passion.

What does a freesia flower smell like?

The freesia blossoms are said to emit hints of honey, mint and strawberry. Some think freesias perfume is soapy and powdery, others woody and citrusy, sunny and peppery.

How to take care of freesia flowers?

Here at Flower Station we pride ourselves on being a completely independent florist and we buy and import all our freesia flowers from the growers directly using procedures as outlined by the Fair Flowers Fair Plants association. As such the freshness of your freesias is virtually guaranteed, however a few tips will make these freesia flowers last even longer. As freesias are very susceptible to dehydration, make sure the freesia flowers are given plenty of clean water and be aware of the falling water line. Before placing the flowers in water, cut the freesia stems and add the flower food sachet as an extra supplement of vitality. Try to keep these flowers from ripening fruit and exhaust flames, as these are sources of ethylene that will accelerate the ageing process by not allowing enough flower buds to open. The ageing top buds should be eventually removed to encourage the new freesia buds to open and flower. Follow our Flower Care Tips for a longer freesia life.
